📖Program Curriculum
Project details Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S) syndrome is considered a serious medical condition that can result in negative long-term health and performance consequences. Sports medicine clinicians use evidence-based principles and guiding frameworks to assist in the management and rehabilitation of RED-S in athletes.
Currently, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) RED-S Clinical Assessment Tool and the Safe Exercise at Every Stage guidance are used by clinicians to inform decision-making during rehabilitation from RED-S. However, it has been highlighted by the IOC, and other prominent authors, that research is required to establish the efficacy of specific exercise recommendations to improve long-term rehabilitation outcomes.
The primary aim of this research will be to examine the effect of a structured strength training programme on musculoskeletal health in athletes rehabilitating from RED-S, and explore the experiences and perceptions of RED-S athletes during the rehabilitation process. This PhD will employ a multi-disciplinary mixed methods design with both quantitative and qualitative data collection.
