Project details
Osteoporosis and osteoarthritis cause substantial disability. The risk of these conditions depends upon bone and cartilage morphology and material properties. Our research group has demonstrated that exercise can modify bone density, whilst producing some structural changes that could further affect the risk of osteoporosis or osteoarthritis.
The project aims to further quantify the effects of these interventions by conducting computational modelling and analyses on existing scan data, to examine effects of exercise on bone and cartilage morphology and properties related to tissue strength or disease risk.
The project will involve working as part of a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Katherine Brooke-Wavell in the School of Sport, Exercise and Health Sciences and Dr Simin Li of the School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering. You will benefit from access to the high quality facilities of these schools as well as the imaging facilities of the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine.
Loughborough University has an applied research culture. In REF 2021, 94% of the work submitted was judged to be top-rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent”. We are a community based on mutual support and collaboration. Through our Doctoral College there are continual opportunities for building important research skills and networks among your peers and research academics.
