Why do some posts go viral on social media and others do not? How can social media analysis be used in business and policy decisions? How do platforms like Facebook change how we live and do business? This MA programme offers a critical exploration of social media within contemporary networked societies and trains students to work with (big) data in a responsible way. Social media have changed the fabric of everyday life and society. This has had important implications for how we inform ourselves, with whom we connect and in which ways, how we organize our daily lives, and how we perform as citizens. Knowledge of the ways these quickly emerging communication infrastructures are fundamentally transforming society is indispensable. At a time when intensive data-gathering and analysis is key for companies and governments, this MA programme’s theoretical approach to social media and their data-driven impact on society helps students in understanding and reflecting on critical issues in order to respond to current societal transformations. The University of Groningen offers over 45 Bachelor's degree programmes, of which more than 37 are taught in English, as well as more than 120 Master's degree programmes, mostly in English. It has a high number of international students, with 9,900 studying at the university, accounting for 27% of the student population. The university has a strong focus on research, with 3,750 academic staff, 400 full professors (24% female), and 4,400 PhD candidates, of which 52% are international. The research is conducted across four thematic schools: energy, health, sustainability, and ICT. The university has produced a significant number of publications, including 640 PhD theses and 8,500 research publications (dissertations not included). The University of Groningen has a strong reputation for research excellence and has received several prestigious awards since 2015. These include the Nobel Prize for Chemistry awarded to Ben Feringa, Spinoza Prizes for Pauline Kleingeld, Amina Helmi, Lodi Nauta, Bart van Wees, and Cisca Wijmenga, and the Stevin Prize for Linda Steg. You are not eligible to apply to this program because:

English fluency is required.
You need to be either:
- A native English speaker
- Studied a degree in English before
- Can demonstrate a high level of English
- Having an English certificate such as IELTS level 6 or TOEFL 95 and above is an advantage.

Minimum education level: Bachelor's.

You need to have above average grades for the program. C average or above 55%.

Application process:

Applying Online is simple in just a few steps. More information is available here.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.

Once submitted to Global Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification

After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.

The university may contact you directly for further questions.

We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.

After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.

Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
