From the canonical to the cutting-edge, the profound to the playful: the current film world is as diverse and critically engaging as ever. So is our Film and Contemporary Audiovisual Media MA track. It equips you to join high-level conversations about timely and fascinating issues. There will always be a “next big thing” in the world of cinema, and we welcome our inspired students to discover it with us. In this one-year Master’s program, you will work closely with our international faculty, whose collective expertise includes phenomenological and cognitive film theory, digital film forensics, queer film studies, post-colonial and settler colonial studies, film festival research, screen acting studies, media anthropology, and more. Students leave our MA program ready to leave their mark on the next chapters of film history, both inside and outside of academia. Our track is unique in its combination of research-driven seminars, the research resources of a worldwide Top 100 university, and the extensive networks of internship opportunities in major film and media institutions. The Master offers a relevant (inter)national internship network. This program will therefore be attractive to students who want to deepen their knowledge of film, swiftly transition into the professional world, and pursue a career in the arts and media sector. The University of Groningen offers over 45 Bachelor's degree programmes, of which more than 37 are taught in English, as well as more than 120 Master's degree programmes, mostly in English. It has a high number of international students, with 9,900 studying at the university, accounting for 27% of the student population. The university has a strong focus on research, with 3,750 academic staff, 400 full professors (24% female), and 4,400 PhD candidates, of which 52% are international. The research is conducted across four thematic schools: energy, health, sustainability, and ICT. The university has produced a significant number of publications, including 640 PhD theses and 8,500 research publications (dissertations not included). You are not eligible to apply to this program because:

English fluency is required.
You need to be either:
- A native English speaker
- Studied a degree in English before
- Can demonstrate a high level of English
- Having an English certificate such as IELTS level 6 or TOEFL 95 and above is an advantage.

Minimum education level: Bachelor's.

You need to have above average grades for the program. C average or above 55%.

Application process:

Applying Online is simple in just a few steps. More information is available here.

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.

Once submitted to Global Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification

After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.

The university may contact you directly for further questions.

We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.

After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.

Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
