Year 1
You will focus on key themes of understanding the nature of business including:
organisational forms
the impact of globalisation and global inequality
the shift to a low carbon economy
the impact of technology and digital disruption
You will gain an insight into the practice of management by using examples of widely-used concepts and techniques in local businesses and the day-to-day role of managers. This will include guest lectures cases and recorded interviews developed in partnership with local organisations.
You will study Global Challenges for Business and The Business of Edinburgh which introduce key concepts of management and business including:
strategy
finance
marketing
management of people
Accounting
You will take an accounting course where you will:
examine the basic principles and underlying concepts of accounting
explore the ways in which accounting statements and financial information can be used to improve the quality of decision-making
learn how accounting relates to the broader context of the strategic and operational aspects of business
Economics
You will also study Economics 1 which is a calculus-based course.
You will develop:
a rigorous understanding of core economic models and analysis and how these are applied in a variety of contexts
an understanding of how economic principles enable managers to make optimal decisions and the government policies that affect those decisions.

Year 2
You will broaden your knowledge of essential business and economics subjects through the study of a compulsory economic statistical analysis course and business economics.

Year 3
As you progress to Honours level you will take a compulsory course in Strategic Management and help prepare for your Dissertation (in Year 4) by extending your Business Research Methods training.
You will also study essential econometrics and microeconomics with a choice between applications of econometrics or macroeconomics.
You can now start to specialise in a particular area of business that interests you or explore a wider range of concepts.
Optional course
You will choose one more specialist Honours course in business building on the knowledge and skills you gained in your Year 2. Examples include:
global business
finance
marketing
innovation and entrepreneurship
business economics
human resource management
business analytics
Year 4
Your dissertation is central to Year 4 and you can choose to take this in either business (the Management Honours Dissertation) or economics.
This is an independent research project that you will conduct on a topic of your choosing that is closely linked to your degree programme.
You will develop skills in:
advanced project management
critical-thinking
cognitive analytical creative evaluative and written communication
building and presenting arguments to a wider audience
You will be allocated an advisor who will offer advice and guidance throughout your Dissertation.
The Management Honours Dissertation will be further supplemented by Dissertation support sessions and hangouts. Here you can share your experiences learn from each other and get timely advice from the Dissertation team.
