📖Introduction
Tohoku University is a Japanese national university that was founded in 1907. It is located in Sendai, Japan and is considered one of the most prestigious universities in the country. The university has five campuses: Katahira, Kawauchi, Aobayama, Seiryo and Amamiya. It is ranked among Japan’s leading universities and is considered one of the top universities in the world.
The Global Governance and Sustainable Development program of Tohoku University is an interdisciplinary program whose primary aim is to enhance one’s ability to advance global governance and sustainable development through a combination of critical reviews of theories and problem-oriented empirical studies.
The aim of the Global Governance and Sustainable Development program of Tohoku University is to enhance one’s ability to advance global governance and sustainable development, two crucial tasks in the world today. The challenges associated with these tasks are complex and inter-linked (see the figure below). To illustrate, one of the major objectives of governance is to strike a balance between economic development and environmental conservation. The notion of development is becoming broader, being implicated in issues such as human security and resource recycling. Furthermore, the management of the global environment requires local responses, the prerequisites of which include good governance and human development.
This being so, what is required for global governance and sustainable development is the ability to question conventional wisdom and to design innovative analytical frameworks on the basis of inter-disciplinary knowledge. This program aims to develop such ability through a combination of critical reviews of theories and problem-oriented empirical studies.
We train the students to become:
-Individuals with strong wills and extraordinary skills to advance global governance and sustainable development, the two crucial tasks in the world today
-Individuals who are able to question conventional wisdom and to design innovative analytical frameworks on the basis of inter-disciplinary knowledge
-Individuals who can tackle various global challenges, by taking scientific and evidence-based approaches to investigate their structure and solutions
-Individuals who expand their intellectual networks globally, by taking advantage of their superior communication and presentation skills
-Individuals who maintain high standards of professional ethics and possess extensive expertise, and therefore are capable of conducting research at leading research institutes and/or taking on complex tasks at international organizations around the world

🏫About
Tohoku University
In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi, moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University’s first president. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender. Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher normal schools, and despite opposition from the government at that time, became Japan’s first university to admit female students in 1913. As of 2022, there are more than 1,700 international students at the university representing 90 different countries and regions. In total there are around 10,000 undergraduates, 4,000 master’s students and 2,600 doctoral students enrolled.
