Study topics across the first three of BA Law include Criminal Law, Public Law, the Legal System, Scots Private Law, Company Law, Employment Law, and International Human Rights Law.
Honours allow you to develop in-depth legal knowledge and understanding in areas of study related to your future career. You’ll also complete a dissertation on a topic of interest.
Year 1
In year 1 core modules include legal theory, contract, criminal and public law and you will be able to develop key legal skills in legal advocacy and legal writing. You will have the option to choose an additional module including a language or a module from another discipline within the University.
Year 2
In year 2 core modules include family, consumer law, corporate property law and conveyancing and succession and trusts. You will have the option to choose additional modules including a language or from another discipline within the University.
Year 3
In year 3 you will deepen your knowledge of the law, completing core modules in international human rights law and legal research methods. Optional modules at this level include ICT law, employment law, sports law, public international law and media law. You will continue to develop your legal writing skills if you pick this optional module. You will have the option to choose additional courses including a language or another discipline within the University.
Year 4
In year 4 you will have to produce a substantial piece of written work either in the form of a 15,000 word dissertation (a substantial piece of research on a topic of your choice) or 2 mini dissertations. Optional modules at this level may include advanced obligations, corporate governance, medical law, equality law and ethics, company law and administrative law.
At all levels, optional modules are subject to change due to staff availability.
Learn a Language (optional)
This course also gives you the option of taking a language module, which can count towards your degree. These modules cover multiple languages and range from absolute beginner to near-native speaker level. The cost of your language module is included in the tuition fees. Find out more
Teaching & Assessment
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and workshops.
There will also be group work and independent learning to ensure you develop transferable skills such as research, presentation, communication and working as part of a team.
